After considerable discussion, the trustees serving on the board of the Foundation decided to replace its Student Scholarship program — which provided funds to graduating high school seniors and college students — and create a new program that would reward students who have completed their college education and are about to enter the classroom as professional educators for the first time.
This is the fourth year that TRTF is hosting this program. In 2019, TRTF received 40 applications and awarded twenty-one $750 scholarships.
Since 2008, TRTF has provided $60,000 in student scholarships for future teachers and $33,750 for educators entering the classroom for the very first time, helping 120 college students and 45 first-year teachers.
The Beginning Teacher Scholarship reimburses applicants for certification tests and test results, and provides funds to help the applicant purchase materials for his or her classroom during his or her first year of teaching. TRTF will award twenty $750 scholarships for the 2020-2021 school year to candidates who are relatives of an active member of the Texas Retired Teachers Association (TRTA), who have earned or are earning an undergraduate or master’s degree in education at a Texas university or college, and have pursued or are pursuing their teaching certification exam.
Students must have taken or be scheduled to take the Texas teacher certification exam in 2020, in anticipation of beginning their teaching career during the fall of 2020 or spring of 2021.
The names of the twenty 2020-2021 TRTF scholarship recipients will be announced at the 2020 Convention of the Texas Retired Teachers Association during the Foundation Luncheon. The convention will be held in Corpus Christi, Texas on April 6-8.
An applicant must:
have taken or be scheduled to take the Texas teacher certification exam in 2020 in preparation to begin teaching in the fall of 2020 or spring of 2021.
be a relative of an active member of the Texas Retired Teachers Association (TRTA).
have earned an undergraduate or master’s degree in education and a teacher’s certification by August 31, 2020.
submit his or her application and college transcripts by 5:00 p.m. on February 27, 2020.
